Well, I might be going all ethereal on you here, but I have been doing a lot of thinking recently about the way I take care of my mind, body and spirit. It all started last Tuesday when I arrived at the end of the day and felt a bit flat. When I went back over the day, I realised that it was the first day for weeks where I hadn’t had any physical interaction with another human being!

I had been to the gym in the morning, so I had taken care of my body. I had done a lot of writing that day, so it could be argued that I had taken care of my mind. I realised that my spirit needs human interaction in order to keep me feeling alive. Although I had spoken to several people on the phone that day, I hadn’t had a face-to-face conversation with anyone. Note to self: spend time with someone physically every day if you don’t want to feel flat.

Yesterday evening I drove a 140-mile round trip to Leighton Buzzard to attend the Area 4 Toastmasters Club Officer Training session. I was tired  after a long couple of days working on building my business and raising my profile in the local business community, and I could easily have stayed at home. But, I had made a commitment to be there, so I got in the car and off I went. Of course, when I arrived, everyone was very pleased to see me and I had a great evening with my fellow personal development aficionados.

There were some delicious home made snacks available in the break, and I made it my business to find out who had prepared them. A lovely self-effacing lady was pointed out to me and I went over and thanked her for her efforts. I got the impression that this lady was the regular refreshment provider and that perhaps she was a little taken for granted. I might be wrong, of course. The glorious smile I got when I complimented her on the food lit up my evening, and meant that I drove home late last night in much greater spirit than I set out with.

Touchy-feely? Pink and fluffy? Maybe, but the spirit is as important as the mind and body, if you are to lead a balanced life.
